Injuring customers..with a smile!

Work

I worked as a Helper Clerk in a grocery store....that means I was the one who stocked the dairy aisle, wine/beer, ad/coupon items on the shelf, end displays, I did it all. I ran around like crazy, usually having only a 5 hour shift to do 8 hours of work. Often times, we used 6-wheeled, flatbed carts to load merchandise on to put on the shelves. Towards the end of my shift one night, I went through the rubber doors out onto the floor with one of those carts. It was loaded with flats of pop. There was a middle-aged couple in front of me, taking up the whole aisle, moving very slowly. My plan was to come up behind them, say "Excuse me," then move around them. Well, I totally misjudged distance, because I came right up on them, hitting the lady's bare heel with my cart wheel!!! I know from experience how badly that hurts-it takes teh skin right off of your heel! She was shocked and hurt very badly. She nearly dropped to the floor. She sat there, knealing on the floor, husband consoling her. I asked over and over, "Are you okay, ma'am??? I am SO sorry!" I wanted to cry, I felt so badly. I offered to get a manager, and she just kind of waved me away, shaking her head "no". I persisted anyway, and she growled, "I'm fine!!! Just go back to work." I went on to finish my job, but had to live with the guilt of injuring an unsuspecting customer!!!
