Hi Mom, Im a Girl!

Other

When I was eight, I was at a summer day camp. Boys and girls from the city would be bussed to this suburban area where we swam and played ball and engaged in typical summer activities. Near the end of the day camp season, we were told that each age group would perform in a show for our parents.

The drama counselor told my group, that we were doing a song and dance by ourselves and the girls were doing something else. She said that half of us would have to be girls for the dance. Our counselor asked who would volunteer and no one did. He said that he'd pick the girls and I was the first boy chosen. I was so humiliated and ashamed. I didn't have the courage to tell my parents that I'd been picked. On the day of the show, I was dressed in a frilly party dress with girl's shoes and lots of makeup. Also, a bonnet which had blond curls attachted to look like long hair. They made us up like little hookers with tons of eye shadow and lipstick and rouge.

I went onstage and saw my mom smile and wave. I wanted to die. It was horrible. Almost as bad as the several months worth of teasing that kids from my school gave me.
